Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Oforikrom Constituency in the Ashanti Region, has raised significant concerns about the current state of Ghana’s political system, calling for urgent reforms to preserve its integrity and ensure that it better serves the needs of the people.
In an appearance on Oyerepa TV, Dr. Marfo shared his perspective on the state of political affairs in Ghana, highlighting what he views as critical shortcomings that need immediate attention.
One of the key issues he emphasized was the need for a comprehensive investigation into the financial contributions received by political parties. According to him, the increasing trend of monetization in politics is compromising the system’s integrity.
He suggested that both political parties and their supporters need to be more transparent when it comes to financial contributions, as this could be a contributing factor to the lack of effective governance.
“I think it’s crucial for us to take a deep dive into the financial contributions to political parties. There’s a growing trend of monetization across all parties, and this needs to be addressed before it erodes the integrity of our political system,” Dr. Marfo stated during the interview.
This isn’t the first time Dr. Marfo has raised concerns about the functioning of Ghana’s political structure. Back in 2018, he made a passionate call in parliament for a more rigorous evaluation of MPs by their respective political parties.
He argued that many MPs are not effectively carrying out their responsibilities, pointing out that issues like punctuality, participation, and engagement in legislative activities were often overlooked.
“Political parties fail to monitor their MPs. There’s no proper mechanism to evaluate their performance, whether they show up on time for sessions or engage actively in debates. This kind of neglect is damaging the integrity of parliament and the entire system,” he lamented.
The MP went on to criticize the focus of political parties, stating that the priority seems to be on increasing their numbers in parliament, often with little regard for the quality of their representatives. According to Dr. Marfo, this short-sighted approach has led to ineffective governance and a failure to address the real issues that affect the people of Ghana.
“During election years, it’s all about numbers, it’s about campaigning for votes, but what happens after the elections? Our political parties should be paying more attention to the work their MPs do once they’re in parliament. That’s what’s missing,” he explained.
