Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, Founding member of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) has bemoaned the clash between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) protesters and personnel of the Ghana Police Service in Kumasi during the “Enough is Enough” demonstration on Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
During an interview on TV3’s Ghana’s Tonight monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Dr Nyaho Tamakloe stated that the incident that happened during the protest in Kumasi gives a clear picture that the police cannot suppress the masses from exercising their rights.
He added that if this incident is trivialized and not addressed, it will turn into a crisis which will call for the attention of the military.
“What is happening now is not about NDC and we have to be very careful. The protest was supposed to be a peaceful walk but what happened in Kumasi is a very important incident. The police cannot suppress the masses.
They might be able to control them to a certain extent. And also if we are not careful, this will escalate into a crisis and if we are in crisis, then we are walking into the hands of the military.” He warned
Dr Nyaho Tamakloe pointed out that the protest staged by the opposition party did not consist only of the NDC but also some other heads of other political parties which is an indication that the EC must address and succumb to the request of the political parties.
It would be recalled that during the “Enough is Enough” demonstration, the police clashed with some protesters at the Commission’s Regional office as they attempted to defy an earlier agreed directive of using a particular route.
This happened when the angry mob was stopped from joining the NDC executives when they went into the regional office to deliver their petition to the head of the Ashanti Regional EC as part of the Enough Is Enough demonstration.
The circumstance intensified into a brawl that broke down barriers and shattered the glass doors of the workplace.
Amid shootings, three more people were reportedly apprehended and a policewoman was reported to have been injured in the process.
