The Speaker of Parliament, Right Hon Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has stated that the construction of the National Cathedral should not be a national project because it was a personal pledge by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to God.

During a one-on-one interview with TV3, the Speaker indicated that the current President then as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) made the promise to God after visiting the Wailing Wall in Israel to pray to God.

According to him, Akufo-Addo made a personal pledge to God that if he made him win the Presidency, he will build a National Cathedral in honour of him (God) arguing that it should not be a project the nation should pay for.

“It was a personal pledge from President Akufo-Addo to God when he visited the Wailing Wall. My evidence is that His Excellency visited the wailing wall 3 times and that was when he pledged to God. But it was a personal pledge by him so it should not be a National Project. He promised God that if he becomes the President, he will construct a National cathedral to honour God”. He claimed

The National Cathedral project was unveiled by the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo in March 2018 as the realization of a campaign-related personal pledge he made to God that if he were elected president in 2016, he would construct it in God’s honour.

The project if it was completed, was expected to be an avenue to call the nation to prayer, to worship, to celebrate and to mourn’, ‘deep national conversations on the role of faith in building the progressive and prosperous Ghana.

According to reports, the total releases made for the National Cathedral by the government to date remain at GH¢339 million but it is still not at the lintel level with lawmaker for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa suspecting thievery in the procurement processes as well as award of contracts.
