Paintsil's impact was immediate, setting up Gabriel Pec for LA Galaxy's opening goal in the 38th minute. His partnership with Pec continued to flourish in the second half, as he assisted former Barcelona midfielder Riqui Puig in the 48th minute to extend their lead.
Despite Portland Timbers' efforts to close the gap, with goals from Jonathan Rodriguez and Santiago Moreno, Paintsil's eighth goal of the season secured LA Galaxy's two-goal cushion and ultimately the victory.
The win consolidates LA Galaxy's position at the top of the MLS standings, with 49 points after match week 26.
