Clement Kofi Asare, the petitioner who challenged the reappointment of the Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Prof Rita Akosua Dickson, has filed an appeal against the decision of the Kumasi High Court.
The high court had dismissed his case on Tuesday (30 July) ruling that the suit lacked merit. In his latest petition to the Court of Appeal, Kofi Asare argued that the trial judge made an error in dismissing the case, describing the verdict as a “travesty of justice.”
He is seeking a review of the decision, maintaining that the reappointment process was flawed and should be reconsidered. It is still not clear whether the defendants in this latest lawsuit have been served. This fresh controversy comes as the vice-chancellor officially begins her second term effective Thursday, (1 August).
As her mandate coinciding with her birthday, the lady professor is said to have led a powerful prayer session seeking divine intervention in the wake of this simmering tension.
Meanwhile, the leadership of the Ashanti Youth Association is taking steps to meet stakeholders over the issue following a petition to their office by the KNUST branch of the Asante Students Union. Secretary of the Association, Tweneboah Kodua says they will seek the intervention of the Manhyia Palace to resolve the impasse.
“As I speak with you the president of AYA has directed me that we should write to the office of the governing council and the school administration and that we want to engage them to know what is actually happening. We also want to meet those who took the matter to court”, Kodua revealed.
“KNUST is one of the institutions dear to Asanteman, also the Asantehene is the chancellor, and this is happening at the time the king is not around and so we need to tread cautiously”, he added.
