Parliament reconvenes today: Here’s what to expect

Ghana’s 8th Parliament will sit today, November 7, 2024, to conduct government business.

Parliamentarians will reconvene at the Accra Conference Center’s Grand Arena.

There is uncertainty as to which political party will be identified as Majority and Minority as the two sides in the house are still not settled on the issues that led to the house being adjourned.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) insist they are in the majority following the decision by the Speaker to declare four seats vacant.

The Supreme Court ordered a stay on the Speaker’s ruling declaring the four seats in parliament vacant, and regardless of the speaker’s move to set aside the ruling, his case was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

But the Speaker of Parliament while addressing the press on November 6, 2024 indicated that he is ready to cooperate with government on any government business.

However, he gave a clear indication that the Constitution is bigger than the Supreme Court and that the Judiciary and the Executive must stop their attempt at weakening the legislative arm of government.

Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament has ordered that the LGBTQI+ Bill be transmitted to the President of Ghana for assent.

Reacting to this decision, Sam George who is one of the people who sponsored the private members bill said “Dear Rt. Hon. Speaker of @parliament_gh, Hon@askbagbin, I am proud of you and your commitment to the protection of our democracy. I am glad of the sacrifices my Colleagues and I made to elect you as Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

I have absolutely no regrets and would do it all over a thousand times. The tyranny of the Executive and the fascism of the current Judicial set-up is the biggest threat to our democracy. It is time we stood up to the malicious, capricious, arbitrary and whimsical dictates of the enemies of our democracy. Let’s go!”
