The current chairman of the finance committee in Parliament, Kwaku Kwarteng, has been reassigned to the position of chairman of the newly constituted economic committee.
This was announced by Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin on Friday (29 June) in Parliament, who maintained that Parliament needs a spokesperson for the economy and Kwaku Kwarteng has been selected to take up the position.
“He’s going to be our spokesperson on the economy. The new economic committee is going to be the most important committee of this House.”
“….. of some of the proactive steps we are taking on this side of the House to throw a serious challenge that is not just about governance, we have a new economic committee. It’s going to be the most important committee in this House.”
“We are challenging you to come up with your [Minority] spokesperson on the economy. You have not said so officially. We are going to make sure we have a spokesperson on the economy to challenge you… Kwaku Kwarteng is now going to face you directly on the economy, not now, I’m just announcing.”
“Yes, that is why we are now going to make Kwaku Kwarteng the chair of the economic committee to face you and be our [Majority’s] spokesperson.”
The economic committee is part of the new committee set up by Parliament as part of the new standing orders in the House.
