Observers have praised our elections; criticisms are baseless – Bossman Asare

Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, has firmly dismissed calls for the removal of EC officials, emphasizing the transparency and efficiency of the Commission’s work.

In an interview with JoyNews, he expressed confidence in the EC’s performance and challenged the criticisms surrounding its operations.

He remarked that Ghana’s electoral system is highly regarded across Africa, adding, “There are laws in this country, and since the Commission took over in 2018, there have been numerous observers, both domestic and international.

The results are publicly available, and in terms of quality, Ghana is among the best in Africa when it comes to elections.”

Dr. Asare rejected allegations of incompetence directed at the EC, particularly its Chairperson, Jean Mensa.

He argued that such calls stem from a lack of understanding of the Commission’s achievements, noting, “If anyone is calling for the removal of someone at the EC, it means they don’t fully understand the work that has been done. The EC has been transparent, cost-efficient, and has done a lot for the country.”

His remarks come amid criticism from several quarters, including members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and prominent businessman Novihoho Afaglo.

Pressure has mounted on former President John Dramani Mahama from party supporters to dismiss Jean Mensa and her team if he returns to office.

Afaglo, a known NDC member, recently accused Jean Mensa of mismanagement and incompetence during the 2024 elections, particularly pointing to delays in announcing results.

He claimed these delays, despite the main contender conceding, raised questions about the EC’s credibility and fueled unrest across the country.
