NPP must emulate NDC’s recovery tactics to regain voter confidence – Jonathan Okyere

Political analyst Dr. Jonathan Asante Okyere has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to adopt a strategy similar to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) following its 2016 election loss.

He emphasized that a thorough review process, like the one undertaken by the NDC, could be instrumental in helping the NPP bounce back from its 2024 defeat.

Speaking in an interview on Starr FM, Dr. Asante Okyere pointed to the NDC’s establishment of the Professor Kwesi Botchwey Committee as a model worth emulating.

“They should go the approach of the NDC, while they set up the Professor Botchwey’s committee. That went round throughout the nation, gathering information and data as to the cause of the defeat that they suffered in 2016,” he explained.

The committee’s work involved extensive consultations with party members and stakeholders nationwide, resulting in actionable recommendations to address shortcomings.

Dr. Asante Okyere credited this process for the NDC’s remarkable turnaround in 2020. “Come 2020, they are able to have the defeat that they suffered in 2016 create a huge parliament. And today, they have an unprecedented victory. And so, that is the best way to go,” he noted.

The NPP, which has faced criticism over internal wrangling and leadership challenges following its loss, could benefit significantly from such an introspective approach, Dr. Asante Okyere suggested.

He warned that rushing into decisions about leadership or future strategies without a proper review could hinder the party’s recovery.

“I’m very sure if they had not done that particular review some years back, and they had gone ahead with those who said they are interested, they wouldn’t have had the gains they saw in 2020,” he said, emphasizing the importance of learning from past mistakes.
