Akwasi Addai Odike, a former Presidential Candidate of the United Front Party (UFP), has descended heavily on the Member of Parliament(MP) for Effiduase-Asokore Constituency Dr Afriyie Ayew over his recent comment about the galamsey menace.
During the weekend, Dr Ayew Afriyie, while on a campaign tour, the lawmaker stated unequivocally that the government has no intention of banning illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, either today or in the foreseeable future.
He asserted that such a ban could lead to significant losses for the party in the upcoming elections, as it would alienate constituents who rely on the mining industry for their livelihoods.
Dr Afriyie further emphasized that the country’s water bodies were previously clean and that the introduction of foreign nationals into the galamsey sector has exacerbated the environmental crisis.
Reacting to the comment of Dr Afriyie, Akwasi the businessman and politician lambasted him while using unprintable words to describe him for charting such a path
“Dr Afriyie doesn’t have any sense of reasoning. He’s one of the fools on earth. Ghanaians will appreciate when the last river is poisoned and the last tree dies then Ghanaians will know that money is not everything. When I was growing up, the only place I heard mining took place was Obuasi and Tarkwa and they had a special way of mining and extracting the gold without destroying the lands and waterbodies”, he lashed out.
Akwasi Odike further disclosed that when his party comes into power, he will ban mining for a year to clear the water bodies.
“When my party wins we will ban surface mining for a year. A lot of miners have broken the rule of international mining regulation because they are neck-deep in the galamsey with politicians. Frimpong Boateng’s report says that most of these miners are not practising responsible mining Our politicians benefit more from most of these mining activities.” He claimed.
