NPP Gov’t keeps issuing licenses amid galamsey fight – NDC Philemon Laar

Lawyer and Communications team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Philemon Laar has lamented how the government keeps issuing licenses for mining amid the fight against galamsey activities.

During a panel discussion on Joy Prime’s Morning Show, Lawyer Philemon Laar stated that about eleven new mining licenses have been issued to people recently although there has been a call for a total ban on mining in Ghana.

“Government issued 11 new mining licenses even when the President was begging TUC to suspend their pending strike on the 11th of October. NPP might try to defend that they gave out licenses to people to do responsible mining but there are people in the forest doing galamsey but holding licenses as miners. That’s why many people have called on the total ban on mining”.  He disclosed

Philemon Laar lamented how the President and his government have failed the country in their failure to fight against galamsey.

“Akufo-Addo and his government have failed in the fight against galamsey, because some of the NPP members are complicit to the extent that they are not setting good examples for people to follow.” He claimed

According to him, when the NDC comes into power, all legalities will be done to stop galamsey and also seek the expert advice of the Attorney General to cancel these licenses issued to miners but used for galamsey activities.

He further added that the NDC will not give license to its appointees to mine when they come into power because it is a conflict of interest.
