Felix Donkor, a communicator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, has mentioned that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s involvement in Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign strategy contributed significantly to the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections.
In a radio discussion in the party’s stronghold of the Ashanti Region, Donkor stated that the president should have distanced himself from the Bawumia campaign, as some of his statements, particularly his infamous response to the Kwabre constituency’s complaints about bad roads, were poorly received.
Unfortunately, no one within the party dared to address these issues at the time.
Donkor emphasized that clear communication and strategic distancing must be considered in future campaigns to avoid a repeat of the situation that led to Bawumia’s poor performance. “Nana Addo hurt the campaign of Dr. Bawumia.
His infamous Kwabre statement, when the people complained about bad roads, was poorly received. The president didn’t speak right,” Donkor noted.
He further stated that the president’s actions, rather than benefiting the campaign, ended up harming it. “The president’s involvement in the campaign was detrimental. People stayed away and didn’t vote because of his actions,” Donkor added.
In addition to the president’s involvement, Donkor highlighted that a growing sense of arrogance and overconfidence within the party also contributed to the defeat.
“It got to a point where people became too arrogant and power-conscious. These issues, combined with others, contributed to our defeat.
“We need to reassess our strategies going forward,” he concluded. The actor at play; many others within the party exhibited a sense of arrogance and entitlement to power.
“It reached a point where people became too arrogant, believing power was their right. This attitude, along with others, contributed to the defeat. We must reconsider our strategies moving forward,” he concluded.
