NPC, WANEP condemn 2024 electoral violence, killings

The Election Situation Room (ESR), created by the National Peace Council (NPC) and the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), is encouraging the National Election Security Taskforce to maintain effective security coordination to avoid electoral excesses.  

The encouragement comes at the back of reported incidents of electoral violence in some constituencies in Ghana’s 2024 general elections. 

One person has been killed in Nyankpala, several others injured and four arrested in connection with a shooting incident during the election. 

Rev Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, the Chairman of the Governing Council of the NPC, said: “We are saddened by the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the Nyankpala community. 

“This incident is unacceptable, and we strongly condemn any act of violence tied to the electoral process.” 

Rev Dr Adu-Gyamfi said: “We plead with all political parties to honour the pledges made by their presidential candidates to ensure peace in our nation. Elections should not result in bloodshed or violence.”  

Another shooting incident is reported in in Kasoa Zongo, in the Awutu Senya East Constituency, leaving one person injured.  

The victim, who reports say is a driver for a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was shot in the thigh during a misunderstanding among voters. 

The NPC and the WANEP, jointly through the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, in Accra based Decision Room of the ESR, condemned the shooting incidents. 

The ESR is a coordinated election observation platform for the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana 

While commiserating with families of the victims, the ESR urged the National Election Security Taskforce to increase security presence in all the potential flashpoints, particularly in the affected constituencies where there had been reported incidents of shootings and violent confrontations. 

Reference to the above-mentioned incidents, the Decision Room of the ESR engaged the Ghana Police Service who confirmed some of the incidents   and have subsequently posted details and the actions taken on their social media platforms. 

The ESR, at the beginning of the election deployed 510 accredited observers, including 319 observers from WANEP to 276 prioritised “very high risk” and “medium risk” constituencies across the nation’s 16 political administrative regions.
