No license for lawyers without clean records, says Chief Justice

Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Essaba Torkonoo has stressed the importance of ethical conduct for new lawyers entering the legal profession indicating that no lawyer will be licensed to practice in Ghana without a clean and clear record.

Speaking at the Annual Bar Conference held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Monday (9 September) the Chief Justice reiterated the responsibility of lawyers to work towards just outcomes, rather than prioritising personal or partisan interests.

“On the issue of ethics, I must very unhappily refer to the consistently increasing numbers of lawyers that are referred to the disciplinary committee of the General Legal Council for unethical practices against their clients. Lawyers are expected to guide their work towards just outcomes and not the other way around,” she stated.

“I have very strongly requested the executive of the Bar Association to communicate to all new lawyers that unless there’s a clean and clear record that proves they have conducted themselves ethically, the General Legal Council will not license them to practice law in this jurisdiction. So will it be for all conditions required for renewing licenses,” the Chief Justice noted.

The Bar Conference brought together legal practitioners from across the country to discuss pressing issues in the judiciary and the legal profession, with the call for accountability and ethical behaviour taking center stage.
