NHIA disburses GHC270 million to healthcare providers

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the disbursement of GHC270 million to healthcare providers across Ghana, covering claims submitted and vetted up to October 2024 and part of November 2024.

The payment, detailed in a press statement issued on Friday (3 January), emphasises the authority’s commitment to maintaining timely reimbursements under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This latest disbursement brings the total amount released by the NHIA over the past four months to GHC1.2 billion.

The NHIA expressed confidence in the prompt payment system introduced earlier in 2024, which has ensured that the authority operates within its agreed three-month reimbursement period.

“The NHIA remains within the agreed-upon three-month reimbursement period and currently has no outstanding  vetted claims to pay,” the statement noted.

“This latest payment brings the total amount released by the NHIA over the past four months to over GHC1.2 billion, reinforcing the Authority’s ongoing commitment to supporting healthcare providers and ensuring the sustainability of the NHIS.”

The authority has made several significant payments in recent months to uphold its pledge of timely reimbursements.

On 1 December 2024, the NHIA released GHC200 million to cover claims for September and part of October.

This followed a disbursement of over GHC335 million on 9 October for August claims.

Additionally, in September, the NHIA began the release of GHC402 million to health facilities for claims covering June and July.

The NHIA’s efforts to maintain a debt-free status have been bolstered by the prompt payment regime introduced this year.

Healthcare facilities are encouraged to adhere to the 90-day claim submission period to facilitate seamless reimbursements.

“The NHIA’s commitment to timely payments is a vital part of its strategy to strengthen the healthcare system, build strong partnerships with healthcare providers, and deliver quality healthcare services to all subscribers of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS),” the statement added.

In its release, the authority expressed gratitude to healthcare providers for their “unwavering dedication and continuous support in providing high-quality healthcare services to Ghanaians.”

The NHIA also pledged to engage stakeholders actively to address any concerns and sustain an efficient healthcare system.
