MTN Ghana has donated 10,000.00 and airtime worth 1000.00 to support this year’s Kente Festival which commences from Monday, 14 to 20 October 2024 at Bonwire in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

The donation marks MTN’s long-standing partnership with the Bonwire community, reflecting the company’s commitment to promoting and upholding the African heritage.

Motivation

Presenting the donation, the Senior Manager for the general trade division at MTN in Kumasi, Mr Simon Amoh highlighted on some activities to be embarked on in the days following the durbar as part of customer engagements.

“MTN is an African Company and in Africa, our culture defines us. Festivals like this also add to the definition of us as Africans.”

“In line with the Kente festival of the Bonwire People we are here to support them in drinks, cash and airtime for the kingmakers to stay connected as they make their calls, have drinks to refresh people and have money to do any other expenses they require at any point in time,” Amoh stated.

“Production of Kente requires a large market to be able to sell. we will provide the opportunity so that Kente manufacturers can also leverage to ensure that they access bigger market using our platforms to be able to sell their products”, he further added.

Commendation

The Chief of Bonwire Nana Bobie Ansah emphasized the significant role the festival plays in celebrating the origins of the Kente cloth and preserving the history of this traditional fabric, which is said to have its mythical roots in Bonwire, dating back to the 16th century.

He extended a special invitation to MTN for the grand durbar on 19 October which will feature a vibrant cultural display of the Kente cloth. The event will also highlight the rich history of Kente, with solidarity messages from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Arts, and other distinguished guests.

The traditional ruler mentioned that invited dignitaries will be treated to a dinner and funfair later in the evening, with a thanksgiving service scheduled for Sunday (20 October).
