Hon Kofi Adams, the Member of Parliament(MP) for the Buem Constituency, emphasized that former President John Mahama has consistently opposed illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.
“I don’t think John Mahama has changed his position on galamsey. He’s been very consistent from 2016 till date,” Adams stated. He highlighted in an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile program, that Mahama’s recent call for the arrest of the powerful figures behind the illegal mining operations rather than merely targeting the small-scale miners who often bear the brunt of enforcement actions.
Mahama’s stance on galamsey is not new. Since his tenure as president, he has vocalized concerns about the environmental degradation and social impact caused by illegal mining.
His government faced significant criticism for the increasing prevalence of galamsey during his administration, leading to pledges to tackle the menace more effectively. Since then, he has maintained that the issue is complex, involving various stakeholders, including influential individuals who exploit the system for personal gain.
On the other hand, the current government, led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has also faced scrutiny for its handling of the galamsey crisis.
Many argue that the government’s approach has been inconsistent, marked by high-profile promises followed by little substantial action. Reports have indicated that despite the NPP’s initial crackdown on illegal mining, the activities have surged again, raising questions about the government’s commitment and effectiveness in curbing galamsey.
The alarming resurgence of galamsey has prompted environmental activists, local communities, and political figures alike to voice their concerns.
In this context, Mahama’s renewed calls for accountability resonate with many Ghanaians who feel that addressing the root causes of galamsey requires a more holistic approach. This includes targeting the “big men” who often fund these operations and ensuring that laws are enforced without prejudice.
