LI on road traffic amendment: We’re taken aback by level of Minority’s dishonesty, says Tampuli

The deputy minister of Transport, Hassan Tampuli has scolded the Minority in Parliament over the withdrawal of the Legislative Instrument (LI) seeking to amend the Road Traffic Regulations to allow Members of Parliament to use sirens and be exempt from speed limits.

The L.I has received backlash, with the Minority Caucus demanding immediate withdrawal by the Transport Minister.

Earlier, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin at a public lecture on private member bills at the University of Ghana, denied knowledge of a Legislative Instrument before the House seeking to amend the Road Traffic Regulations.

On the floor of Parliament on Tuesday (16 July), the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah who moved the motion on behalf of the Roads and Highways Minister said the decision comes after extensive review with the leadership of the House.

Reacting to the development on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday(17 July), Tampuli ” We are completely taken aback by the level of dishonesty by the Minority Caucus.”

“… It was not an oversight it was a matter of judgement, the Minister of Transport Kwaku Ofori Asiamah at a meeting insisted that he was not going to include those provisions.”

“So the government right from the beginning did not think the amendment was necessary. These amendments were uncalled for and unnecessary. The subsidiary legislation committee is chaired by the Minority,” he said.

Tampuli added, “So these matters are out there in the public, [and] we are hearing the Minority has written a letter distancing themselves and this is the level of dishonest that is more or less characterised by the leadership of this Minority.”
