The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has pointed out that the introduction and launch of a chip-embedded passport in Ghana marks the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s developmental drive.
The President said this in his keynote address at the formal ceremony to launch Ghana’s chip-embedded passport at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC) on Monday, 2 December 2024.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo indicated that “the launch of the chip-embedded Ghana passport is not the end of the journey” but rather, “It is the beginning of a new chapter.”
“It symbolizes our aspirations for a modern, inclusive, and globally respected Ghana. Let us embrace this moment with pride and commitment, recognizing that every step forward strengthens our nation and empowers our people,” President Akufo-Addo remarked.
“Together, we are building a Ghana that is secured, innovative, and ready to take its rightful place on the global stage,” President Akufo-Addo further remarked in his speech.
Celebrating rich history
President Akufo-Addo recognized that the new chip-embedded passport is designed to celebrate the country’s rich history beyond its technology and modernity.
“Beyond its technological and practical advantage, the new Ghana passport is a celebration of our national identity. It is designed to incorporate elements of our rich cultural heritage, including adinkra symbols such as “fawohodie,” democracy, and cooperation. These symbols remind us of the values that define us as Ghanaians: freedom, resilience, and unity,” President Akufo-Addo said.
Commendations
President Akufo-Addo, in his statement, commended the public-private aspect of the new chip-embedded passport policy and noted that he is confident that the same will deliver a world-class passport system for the country
The president also expressed Ghana’s appreciation to the government and people of Hungary for their exceptional contribution to the success of the [chip embedded passport initiative].
Technological advancement
The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and Secretary General-elect of the Commonwealth, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, noted that the introduction of the new chip-embedded passport is not merely an upgrade in technology but a manifestation of the country’s sincere dedication to efficiency, security, and adherence to international standards.
“While the current biometric passport has served us steadfastly for over a decade, the demands of fast-paced technological evolution have necessitated this upgrade. As the gateway to Africa, Ghana has remained at the forefront of growth and development by implementing novel technological development in security documents, taking into account new international standards, threats and growth prospects,” Miss Ayorkor Botchwey said.
