Kenya reigns supreme as Africa’s Olympic powerhouse

Kenya solidified its position as Africa’s dominant sporting force by claiming 11 medals at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The East African nation finished an impressive 17th on the overall medal table, surpassing its 2020 Tokyo place of 19th with a tally of ten medals.

Kenya’s dominance in long- and middle-distance running was once again on full display.

Beatrice Chebet secured double gold in the 5,000m and 10,000m, while Faith Kipyegon clinched the 1,500m title. Emmanuel Wanyonyi added to Kenya’s gold medal haul with a victory in the men’s 800m.

Kipyegon made history by becoming the first athlete, male or female, to win three consecutive Olympic 1500m gold medals. She also broke her own Olympic record in the process, clocking an astonishing 3:51.29.

Algeria secured second place among African nations with two gold and one bronze medal, followed by South Africa with one gold, three silver, and two bronze.

The United States topped the overall medal table, followed by China and Japan.
