Adutwum to students: Embrace STEM education for future job security

Education Minister, Yaw Osei Adutwum has emphasised the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in ensuring future job security.

Speaking at the 60th anniversary celebration of Kumasi High School on Saturday (27 July) Osei Adutwum referenced projections from the World Economic Forum, which indicate that 50% of current jobs will be affected by automation, a situation he said could be mitigated through a robust education framework.

Highlighting the significant investments made by the Akufo-Addo administration in STEM education, the minister expressed the government’s commitment to preparing students for the evolving job market.

“A number of things are happening. Jobs are changing…If your country recognises Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education then you will have a net gain, not a net loss. You lose the jobs; you create different ones. But if we do not keep abreast with Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education our nation will experience a net loss of jobs that is to say that some jobs will disappear, and we will never be able to create more jobs to replace them”, he explained.

“And that is why I am happy that the President has made a great investment in STEM education across the length and breadth of this country. This investment is helping us to increase the number of our graduates in the next few years of our universities in STEM-related courses in the areas that are in very high demand”, he remarked.

Dr Osei-Adutwum also highlighted the significant improvements in public schools and urged Ghanaians to reflect on these achievements as they prepare for the upcoming 7 December elections.

He asserted that the progress in education is not merely talk but a testament to the government’s commitment to changing the course of history.

“We believe that the future of Ghana will become brighter when we come together and work to create a better nation,” Osei-Adutwum said. “Look at what we have done and make a decision for yourself on December 7.”

The Minister announced that the government through the GETFUND Secretariat would commit funds to complete the sports complex it has earmarked as a monument for being 60 years old.

He noted that work would soon begin on the project since the drawings and architectural designs had been made ready.

“Kumasi High School deserves the best of everything since the school’s academic performance shows for same and for us in government, we will do our part to resource and make Secondary School Education conform to modern standards across the world”, the Minister stated.
