The director of special projects at the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Ahuma Bosco Ocansey, popularly known as Daddy Bosco, has said that it is important to prioritise musicians and their crafts because of their impact on the economy.
Speaking on Asaase Arsty on Saturday (28 September), Daddy Bosco said, “ If you look at the impact of music on national life, it far surpasses, with all due respect, what sports does.”
The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has announced plans to introduce a minimum wage system for its members.
By establishing a minimum wage, MUSIGA intends to alleviate some of the financial challenges faced by its members, many of whom struggle to earn a sustainable income from their craft.
He added that musicians must acknowledge the organisation that oversees them in order to mobilise support.
“Musicians must acknowledge that the Musicians Union of Ghana, established in 1975 and still going strong, is without a doubt the most recognised association of musicians.”
“If we look at ourselves as professionals, which we are, there is the Ghana Medical Association. No legitimate doctor in Ghana will say I’m a practicing medical practitioner and I’m not a member of the Ghana Medical Association. Same like the Ghana Bar Association.”
According to Daddy Bosco, whether you are an A-list artist, a B-list artist, or an underground artist, the industry must be united.
“But we have people who claim they’re not part of MUSIGA. So this is the appeal I’m making to them: If we want our profession to be accorded the respect it deserves so that in terms of sharing the national pie we get what is due to us, then they’ll realise that music is one tool they can leverage.”
He added, “If you look at the brand leverage Nigeria enjoyed just because of the new thing they have with Afrobeats, let me put it that way, the perception of Nigeria has changed drastically.”
He also noted that Nigerians were previously known as scammers but that perception has gradually changed due to the impact of their music.
“I remember 10 years ago when you say Nigeria; what comes to mind? 419. Oh yeah. But now you call Nigeria and they exude a certain pride from music. And of course, by extension, the creative arts.”
“So it’s important that musicians realise that we need to join the musicians union and then push it. Next year MUSIGA will be 50.
