President John Dramani Mahama has once again addressed the controversial LGBTQ+ bill that is currently pending approval in Ghana.
The bill seeks to criminalize the activities of individuals within the LGBTQ+ community, a topic that has sparked intense debate across the nation.
Mahama said he believes the process of addressing this issue should be rooted in unity, extensive consultations, and alignment with Ghanaian family values.
“I don’t support homosexuality, particularly relationships between men or women,” Mahama stated. His position is firmly grounded in his personal and political views on family values and societal norms.
The president explained the current status of the bill, noting that it has not yet been passed due to a series of technical challenges.
One significant hurdle, he pointed out, is the uncertainty surrounding the financial implications of the bill’s passage.
“There has been talk about whether the government should fund this bill. The Attorney General had previously stated that it could be passed through a private member’s motion without putting any financial strain on the state,” Mahama recalled.
While maintaining his firm opposition to LGBTQ+ activities, Mahama emphasized the need for a thoughtful approach to the legislation. “If we decide to move forward with this, it should be a government bill, not a private member’s motion,” he suggested.
