Dr Gideon Boako, the spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed strong condemnation of illegal mining activities in Ghana in a recent interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show.

He highlighted the destructive impact of such practices, particularly those that take place in and around water bodies, which are vital for cooking and drinking purposes for Ghanaians.

Boako emphasized that the current state of illegal mining is not just a minor issue; it poses a significant threat to the environment and to communities that rely on these natural resources.

He stated, “Dr Bawumia’s position on illegal mining and the rampant destruction it causes is clear. Mining in our water bodies is particularly concerning. The consequences of these actions are dire, affecting both the land and the people who depend on it.”

He further remarked, “Anything that will destroy human lives is evil and must not be countenanced.”

He reiterated the Vice President’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining while supporting legal operations that adhere to environmental regulations.

In recent weeks, Ghana has witnessed a surge of public demonstrations against illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey.”

This grassroots movement has garnered significant attention as citizens voice their frustration over the environmental degradation and public health risks posed by unregulated mining operations.

Protesters have been seen waving placards and chanting slogans that emphasize the urgent need for government intervention.

Many participants are driven by a shared concern for the nation’s natural resources, particularly the water bodies that are being polluted by illegal mining activities. “We cannot allow our rivers to be destroyed. Our health and future depend on clean water,” shouted one demonstrator during a rally in Accra.

The impact of galamsey has been profound. Rivers and lakes across the country are increasingly contaminated by toxic chemicals used in gold extraction processes, leading to severe health implications for communities that rely on these water sources for drinking and cooking. The demonstrations have highlighted these issues, drawing attention to the link between illegal mining and the deterioration of public health.

The protesters are not only calling for stricter enforcement of mining laws but also demanding accountability from government officials who they believe have failed to act decisively against illegal operations. “We want to see action, not just promises. Our leaders must prioritize the health and safety of Ghanaians over profits,” stated a local activist involved in organizing the demonstrations.
