The deputy general secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Haruna Mohammed, has issued a stern warning to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against resorting to violence should Mahamudu Bawumia win the 2024 general elections.
Mohammed’s remarks come in response to recent statements made by Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament (MP) for Abetifi, and Malik Basintale, a deputy national communications officer of the NDC.
Their comments have sparked concerns about possible unrest in the lead-up to the crucial 7 December poll.
Speaking on Asaase Radio’s Big Bulletin on Monday (12 August), Mohammed defended Acheampong, asserting that the minister’s words were not intended to incite violence or undermine the country’s constitution.
“If you look at the commentary that is made by Bryan Acheampong, he was very specific with the matters that he was talking about; he never incite[d] violence and he never impune[d] on any Constitution of the Republic,” Mohammed said.
He went on to caution the NDC against taking any “nasty” actions if Bawumia emerges victorious in the presidential race.
While he stopped short of clarifying whether such actions would be met with violence, Mohammed made it clear that the NPP is prepared to defend itself.
“So if my brothers are thinking that the Presidency of Ghana is the birthright of John Mahama, I want to put it on record [that] John Mahama will lose the elections in 2024 and power will be transferred to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as president and I want to tell the NDC in their face [that] if they try any nasty thing, they will meet us,” he warned.
“We as a party will never start any violent activity but if the NDC makes a mistake and starts any nasty thing, I repeat any nasty thing, they will meet us as a party,” Mohammed reiterated.
