GTRCC: No justification for transport fare increase, ignore claims by Concerned Drivers Association

The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GTRCC) has said there is no justification to warrant an increase in transport fares in the country.

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has announced a 15% increase in transport fares, effective Monday, 22 July 2024.

The association cited the rising fuel cost as the primary reason for the fare hike, noting that some oil marketing companies now sell fuel at prices exceeding GHC15.

However, speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (19 July) general secretary of the GTRCC, Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah said the Concerned Drivers Association is not a recognised group.

“The so-called group is not known to us in the scheme of increasing transport fares, it has been the practice of GPRTU and GRTCC, these are the two bodies that meet with the Transport Ministry to determine the percentage we should add as transport fares.”

“The numbers we see as of now do not necessitate any increase because, from the last increase, fuel prices have not even gone up more than 5%. But you can only trigger the discussion for transport fare increase when it has gone past 10%,” Ohene Yeboah said.
