Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga Central Isaac Adongo has stated that the Government of President Akufo-Addo will not pay customers of collapsed banks who had their deposits locked up, and who have been demanding that they be paid their money.
He said that the recent announcement by Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam that the Government had set aside GHC 1.5 billion to pay affected customers will not come to fruition – customers will not get paid.
He recounted how in 2020 despite Government assurances and the issuance of papers to the customers, the customers did not get their money back.
For him, the Government is merely seeking to deceive the affected customers for electoral gain in the upcoming General Elections.
“You remember in 2020, I gave a lecture at the Kama Conference Centre. And at that programme, I told you that I had received a call from His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, saying that I should tell the people of Ghana that when he wins power he will pay everybody.
Immediately they went and issued papers. They gave everybody a bond. What happened to the bonds? 2024 is another election year. So they have forgotten that in 2020 they made that promise. People have forgotten where the papers are lying,” he told the media on the premises of Parliament today, June 26, 2024.
Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam recently revealed the Government’s plan to extend a hand of magnanimity to the long-suffering customers of the collapsed banks by releasing GHC 1.5 billion to refund their money to them.
But for Mr Adongo, the customers should count their losses since they are not going to be paid by this current administration.
