Ghana’s Eagles place third at 2024 Rugby Africa Repechage Pool A

Ghana’s national men’s rugby union team, the Eagles, claimed third place at the 2024 Rugby Africa Repechage Pool A tournament held at the Stade Municipal de Jemmal in Tunisia from 18 to 22 December 2024.

The tournament, a critical qualifier for the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup in Kampala, Uganda, tested the Eagles against formidable opponents—Zambia, Nigeria, and hosts Tunisia.

The stakes were high, with only one slot available to advance to the repechage grand finale against Morocco, the champions of Pool B, for a chance to compete in the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup, which is a key step on the road to the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup.

Ghana’s campaign started on a challenging note. On Wednesday (18 December), the Eagles faced Zambia’s Copper Eagles in their opening match.

Despite a spirited performance, Ghana fell short, losing 31-22 and ending their hopes of progressing to the repechage grand finale.

However, the Eagles refused to let their journey end in defeat. They regrouped for the third-place playoff on Sunday (22 December), against regional rivals Nigeria.

The Ghanaians, making five changes to their lineup following the Zambia match, delivered a commanding performance. They controlled the game and emerged victorious with a hard-fought 24-19 win.

Elsewhere in the tournament, hosts Tunisia showcased their dominance. After defeating Nigeria 34-10 in their opening match, Tunisia stormed to a 29-7 victory over Zambia in the final, securing the coveted spot in the repechage grand finale against Morocco.

Although Ghana’s Eagles fell short of their ultimate goal, their resilience and determination were evident throughout the tournament.

Their third-place finish emphasises the team’s potential as they look to regroup and build towards future campaigns on the African rugby union stage.
