Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam has lauded Ghanaian journalists for the sacrifices they make in discharging their duties as the Fourth Estate of the Realm, noting that they deserve improved remuneration and recognition.
He therefore launched a special appeal to media owners in the country to provide better conditions of service to journalists
Dr Amin Adam, who is also the Member of Parliament(MP) for the Karaga Constituency, noted that improved conditions of service will put journalists in a better position to do credible, professional and independent work, lamenting that the current state of journalists is unacceptable.
“Knowing the kind of sacrifices you[ journalists] make in the discharge of your duties, we don’t reward you enough. I have interacted with a number of you and some of the proprietors of radio and TV stations as well as the newspapers and I’m mostly shocked about the conditions of service in which you work…This is why I’m worried that in spite of the role you play in carrying the messages of the people to the government and also informing citizens about government policies and programmes, you continue to live in conditions that are not palatable for the role that you play,” he lamented.
“I want to use this opportunity to call the proprietors of our media institutions to take steps to reward you appropriately for the great job you are doing and for the service you providing for our society,” Dr Amin Adam said in his speech as the Guest Speaker at the Northern Regional Ghana Journalists Association(GJA) Awards ceremony in Tamale on September 14, 2024.
Despite the important role journalists play in Ghana’s democracy, their conditions of service remain generally poor.
