Presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama said an increase in the consumption of clean energy will be a major component of the country’s energy strategy as part of plans to implement his party’s 24-Hour Economy policy.
Since the availability of stable and affordable energy will be a prerequisite for the success of the policy, former President Mahama pledged to ensure increased availability of energy in general and clean energy in particular so as to ensure the economy runs on a 24-hour basis when the NDC wins the upcoming General Elections.
“We will systematically match generation with forecasted demand and address reserve requirements. The new administration will increase clean energy consumption in line with our energy transition agenda and provide the necessary fiscal and regulatory incentives to attain a 10 per cent share of non-hydro renewable energy in our generation mix,” Mr. Mahama assured energy sector stakeholders in Accra.
To incentivise businesses to run a 24-hour system, John Mahama revealed that a time-of-use tariff will be implemented as part of a raft of interventions to stimulate the economy.
“Other key interventions would include the implementation of a time-of-use tariff to provide affordable and stable electric power for businesses to operate around the clock,” John Mahama explained.
The 24-Hour Economy policy is a major component of the NDC’s strategy to revitalize and grow the economy when they are given the mandate to manage the country. The party has argued that the policy will create employment and bring much-needed economic growth and development.
