Ghanaian artists need a unique sound to hone their craft, says Gyankromah Akufo-Addo

The executive secretary of the Creative Arts Agency, Gyankromah Akufo-Addo, has reiterated that Ghanaian musicians must create a distinct sound for their crafts to be marketable to investors.

The Creative Arts Agency Ghana launched the musical campaign dubbed “Play Ghana” to promote Ghanaian music and art in the country.

The Play Ghana campaign, led by Gyankromah Akufo-Addo, and creative arts activist Smallgod, seeks to rally support for local music and legislation that promotes the broadcasting of local content.

Speaking on Asaase’s Artsy show on Saturday (13 July) Akufo-Addo said, “We need a unique sound as artists in Ghana.”

“If you go to Jamaica, their sound is calypso, reggae, South Africa is Amapiano, you will go to Rio, and they have salsa.”

According to her, some definitions identify a culture, “and it is not to say that the music that we have now should be scrapped or that the music that we are going to do is pointless. It is just to hone the craft and be able to market it.”

She added, “Our music scene must be treated as a business model to entice and attract investment and until it is re-fenced and has boundaries around it, it is not attractive to an investor.”
