The 16-year-old son of Bishop Elisha Salifu Amoako, founder and general overseer of Alive Chapel International, has been sentenced to six months at a senior correctional centre after pleading guilty to eight charges, including two counts of manslaughter.
The charges stem from a tragic road accident in East Legon that claimed the lives of two preteens. The court proceedings, held at the Family and Juvenile Court, revealed that the teenager was showing off the speed of a Jaguar F-Pace Sport, a vehicle belonging to his parents, when the crash occurred. The white Jaguar collided with a black Acura in which the victims were traveling.
According to police prosecutors, the young driver, accompanied by a friend, drove the Jaguar to A&C Mall, where they met friends waiting in two other SUVs.
The three vehicles formed a convoy, with the accused leading in the Jaguar. The convoy sped through the East Legon area before the fatal crash occurred.
During the initial court proceedings, the teenager pleaded not guilty to all charges. However, he later admitted guilt to eight charges, including manslaughter. He was remanded at the Osu Correctional Centre during the trial.
Arrests and additional charges
Following the accident, the boy’s parents, Bishop Salifu Amoako and his wife, Mouha Amoako, along with Linda Bonsu Prempeh, a sales assistant, were arrested.
The Accra Circuit Court granted bail to the bishop and his wife at GH¢50,000 each, with two sureties. Linda Bonsu Prempeh, who allegedly handed the car key to the teenager, was also granted bail under similar conditions.
All three have been charged with “permitting an unlicensed person to drive” and pleaded not guilty during their court appearance on October 16, 2024.
Court’s directives and outcome
The Family and Juvenile Court carefully considered the conditions of the teenager’s remand, issuing specific directives for his care while in custody. His six-month sentence at a senior correctional centre reflects the court’s attempt to balance accountability with the principles of juvenile justice.
This case has sparked public discussions about road safety, parental responsibility, and the enforcement of laws regarding unlicensed drivers in Ghana. The tragedy has left a lasting impact on the families of the victims and raised questions about the responsibilities of those who allowed the teenager access to the vehicle.
