Ghana set to develop national plan for youth participation in peace and security

Ghana is on track to creating a National Action Plan (NAP) as part of its commitment to the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2250, which advocates for youth participation in peace and security matters.

Once finalised, the policy will empower young people to contribute meaningfully to peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and creating a resilient future for the nation.

In view of this, the Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre held a workshop to clarify the roadmap and secure commitments for the effective implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP`).

The workshop aimed to strengthen partnerships and promote greater collaboration among stakeholders involved in youth, peace, and security.

Empowering Youth in Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution

Speaking at the workshop aimed at gathering stakeholder input for the NAP, deputy Commandant of the Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre, David Annetey Akrong, emphasised the importance of developing the NAP as a strategic tool for harnessing the potential of young people in Ghana and across Africa.

He said, “Young people are not just beneficiaries of peace; they are agents of change, driving innovation and playing an active role in peacebuilding.”

Call for collective action

The deputy chief executive officer of the National Youth Authority, Nelson Owusu Ansah, highlighted the need for a united approach in fostering peace and security.

“It is crucial to acknowledge the importance of peace and understand that preserving security requires a shared commitment from all,” he stated.

He also encouraged stakeholders to collaborate in creating a framework that enables youth to actively engage in peacebuilding and conflict resolution.

Broad stakeholder engagement

The workshop was attended by representatives from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), GIZ, various government organisations, youth groups, and the Ministry of National Security. Their involvement ensures that the NAP will be comprehensive, inclusive, and actionable.
