Galamsey : We’re not dealing with a simple Issue- Toxicologist on antibiotic resistance

Dr. Bright Boafo Boamah, a Medical Doctor and Toxicologist has hinted on the intricate challenges surrounding antibiotic resistance and water pollution compelling discussion on JoyNews’ Newsfile program.

Dr. Boamah highlighted a critical point about the current ineffectiveness of many antibiotics. “Currently, most of the antibiotics are not responding because normally it’s due to poor use of antibiotics or prescriptions, but it has also been shown that this heavy metal induces some antimicrobial resistance.”

The fact that heavy metals found in polluted water sources can further exacerbate this problem adds an urgent dimension to the ongoing discussions about environmental protection and public health.

Speaking further on the show monitored by MyNEwsGh.com, Dr. Boamah also tackled the daunting task of restoring Ghana’s polluted water bodies, suggesting that the recovery process could take between 10 to 15 years if it is even possible at all.

“I know there are some water bodies that cannot be restored,” he admitted a statement that resonates deeply with communities affected by the pollution.

Rivers and lakes that once provided vital resources for drinking water, irrigation, and fishing are now shadows of their former selves, contaminated by heavy metals and other pollutants from industrial activities, including illegal mining.

The recovery of these water bodies is not just an environmental issue; it’s a matter of human health and survival. Many communities, especially those in rural areas, rely heavily on these water sources for their daily needs.

The long timeline for restoration presents a sobering reality: immediate action is required to address both the sources of pollution and the rising levels of antibiotic resistance.
