Free SHS is good, but poorly executed—Dr. Apaak

Dr. Clement Apaak has intensified his criticism of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s flagship Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

While acknowledging the policy’s potential, he argued that its implementation has been deeply flawed, leaving Ghanaians frustrated and disillusioned.

In an interview on Starr FM, the Member of Parliament for Builsa South declared, “We all agree that Free Senior High School is a good policy, but it has been poorly implemented.

The challenges are self-evident, which is why Ghanaians overwhelmingly rejected Bawumia, Akufo-Addo, and the government and are bringing in John Mahama to come and improve and sustain the good policy.”

Since its launch in 2017, the Free SHS initiative has been celebrated for its aim to provide free secondary education for all Ghanaian children.

However, critics like Dr. Apaak argue that the policy’s rollout has been marred by inadequate preparation, leaving schools struggling with overcrowding, lack of resources, and delayed funding.

For many students, the introduction of the double-track system, where academic terms are divided to accommodate the surge in enrolment, has disrupted learning.
