EPA steps out to address challenges posed by ozone layer depletion

The Management of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has underscored measures to address challenges posed by the Ozone layer depletion on the environment.

The move is expected to reduce and control ozone-depleting substances in the country.
The Acting Director of the Climate Change and Ozone Department of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Mr Joseph Amankwa Baffoe disclosed that the EPA was working hard to kick out the use of pollutants appliances including hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) out of the system.

He made this known at the 2024 World Ozone Day seminar for selected Senior High Schools in Cape Coast with an aim to raise awareness about the ozone layer and its significance.

The World Ozone Day which was organized by the EPA in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP) was held with the theme “Montreal Protocol: Advancing Climate Action, highlights the critical role of the Montreal Protocol”.

Mr. Amankwa Baffoe called on the general public to patronize products that have hydrocarbon, citing that, ” the benefits you get from hydrocarbon refrigerants is also energy saving”.

According to the EPA boss, “EPA will soon get refrigerators and air conditioners that contain HFCs out of the systems. Eventually we are getting them out of the system”.

“Since the refrigerators are the common products in Ghana in terms of ozone depletion, EPA is moving to chemicals that are more environmentally friendly.

We have hydrocarbon refrigerants so for every air conditioner or every refrigerator that you buy there is a label to check and if it contains HFC don’t patronize those products”, Mr. Amankwa Baffoe explained.
