Wife of the Vice-President, Hajia Samira Bawumia has urged Zongo communities in the Ashanti Region to show their support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the 2024 general elections approach.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has long maintained strong ties with the Zongo communities, a relationship that dates back to the era of the party’s founder, the late Jerry John Rawlings. Ahead of the upcoming 7 December elections, the NDC has predicted it will secure 80 to 90% of the Zongo votes.
However, speaking at a gathering in Abofour Zongo in the Offinso South Constituency of the Ashanti Region on Tuesday (8 October), the Second Lady called on the Zongo communities to reconsider this trend.
She emphasised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) commitment to unity and inclusiveness, citing the party’s landmark decision to appoint Alhaji Aliu Mahama as Ghana’s first Muslim vice-president as a testament to the NPP’s dedication to representing all Ghanaians.
“And now we have Dr Bawumia leading us because the party believes in his vision for a better Ghana. NPP has shown unwavering support for us and of course the Christian community is voting for him. It is time for Zongos to reciprocate this love by voting massively for him”, she said.
“[To our women], Dr. Bawumia has good news for you. He plans to establish the Women’s Trade Empowerment Fund to facilitate easier access to financial resources for female entrepreneurs, particularly those engaged in small to medium-sized enterprises. We know the pivotal role women play in our household, and he is poised to make things happens”.
“The digitalisation agenda will be on course under Bawumia’s presidency. Beneficiaries of the “Free SHS” programme and over one million digital jobs will be created through the digital training programme”, she added.
95% votes
In response to the MP for Offinso South, Dr Isaac Yaw Opoku’s promise of giving Dr Bawumia 90% presidential votes come Decembe 2024, she urged him and his team to intensify their campaigns to increase the votes to 95 per cent.
She appealed to the electorate to retain Mr Akwasi Acquah as their legislator to assist her husband when he is elected as the next President. She praised the people in the Offinso South for voting massively for the NPP over the years.
For his part, Dr Opoku enjoined the NPP supporters in the area to intensify their campaigns by moving from house to house and all vantage points to ensure a resounding victory for Dr Bawumia and the NPP in the upcoming general election.
Mahama not an option
Taking his turn to engage the constituents was Ashanti Region Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako aka “Wontumi” who made a strong case for Dr Bawumia’s presidency.
“John Mahama and NDC had initially said Free SHS was impossible. Dr Bawumia and his Boss Akufo-Addo took the challenge and implemented it. Now the NDC said they started it. Is that not surprising?” Many households have benefited from this policy, and it is important to state that when the NDC comes to power they will scrap this policy.
“This election is very critical for our children’s future and a vote for Dr Bawumia promises a renewed commitment to improving their lives”, he noted.
As part of her seven-day tour across the Ashanti Region, Hajia Samira Bawumia is engaging with key constituencies, particularly Zongo settlements, to rally support for her husband’s presidential campaign. The campaign team made a stop at Offinso Kokote, Kodie and Mpobi communities both in the Afigya Kwabre South Constituency.
She is expected to visit the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday (9 October).
