ECG board chair: Government must privatise some aspects of ECG’s operations

The Minister of State- designate for the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa has emphasised the need to privatise some operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) particularly, commercials and retail.

Krapa who doubles as board chairman of ECG, says the main challenge of the company is its inability to collect revenue leading 30% loss.

He said although recent initiative to digitalise revenue collection has almost doubled ECG’s revenue, it still needs help in that direction.

He argues this could help inject some efficiency into the operations of ECG in terms of revenue mobilization

Krapa said this when he appeared before Parliament’s appointments committee for vetting on Tuesday (9 July).

“What I think is that we have to break into two the operations of ECG, the bulk supply point operation, sub transmission, 33KV, 11KVA, distribution transformers, all of that I believe should continue to be the mainstay of ECG.

“The bottom part, the downstream LV’s commercials and retail, I believe ECG can use some private participation to help with capital technology and efficiency.”

“So that bringing all of those efforts together, we can collect the electricity we sell and be able to generate power seamlessly for our customers
