EC expands media access to collation centres with 4,500 accreditation slots

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced an increase in media accreditation for covering constituency and regional collation centres during the December general election.

The total number of accreditation cards will now be 4,500, up from an earlier proposed minimum of 3,308.

This decision was shared by EC Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa at a press conference on Friday (29 November).

The EC stated that the cards will be handed over to the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and the Ghana Independent Broadcaster Association (GIBA) by Sunday evening for distribution.

It further emphasized that it will not be involved in the allocation of the cards, which will be managed by GJA and GIBA.

Mrs. Mensa clarified that the initial memo specifying limited media access was to ensure a baseline level of coverage, rather than to restrict access.

The adjustment to 4,500 cards was agreed upon after discussions with media associations, considering space limitations at collation centres.

The EC reiterated its commitment to working closely with the media to ensure transparency in the electoral process.
