JohnDramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticized his political opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, over the newly commissioned digital gates at the airport.
During one of his campaign tours, Mahama recounted his attempt to use the Ghana Card to access the newly introduced digital gates at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) following their launch by Dr. Bawumia. Mahama revealed that despite the Ghana Card’s touted capabilities, it did not work, leading him to question the effectiveness of the digitization initiative.
Mahama further argued that Dr. Bawumia cannot continue to use digitization as a tool for propaganda. “The digital gates didn’t open for the digital man.
If the fundamentals of digitization are weak, the digital gates will expose you,” Mahama remarked, subtly criticizing Bawumia’s handling of the country’s digital infrastructure.
Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia officially launched the advanced digital border control system and e-gates at KIA on December 3rd, 2024.
This initiative incorporates biometric and facial recognition technologies, marking a significant advancement in border management and reinforcing Ghana’s position as a leader in global travel innovation.
The new system enables Ghanaian citizens with the Ghana Card to bypass traditional immigration procedures and pass through designated e-gates seamlessly. Diaspora members and foreign visitors can also use the e-gates by pre-registering their biometric data and travel credentials.
At the launch, Vice President Bawumia hailed the project as a “monumental leap forward in border management,” stressing that it was “designed and built by Ghanaians” and is “fully owned and managed by the Ghana Immigration Service.”
