Diana Aburiya Asuure optimistic about Bongo constituency win

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Bongo constituency in the Upper East Region, Diana Aburiya Asuure, says the party is in a strong position to win the parliamentary seat in the 7 December polls.

Asuure’s confidence stems from the party’s commitment to expanding roads along with other critical infrastructure in the area.

She spoke to asaaseradio.com, saying, “From Sumbrungu, the [Bolgatanga] Technical University, going to Agose, through Zorko to Namoo, that particular road is under construction.”

“From the Bolgatanga Technical Area to the Zorko Area has been tarred. If you take the road from the Yorogo Chief Palace, going through Dua, Bogoro, Bongo Soe to Feo, that road has been awarded, and the contractor is on site. There are many other roads being worked on.”

The implementation of the District Road Improvement Project (DRIP), according to Asuure, further demonstrates the NPP government’s dedication to the development of the constituency.

However, the earth-moving equipment procured under DRIP has yet to begin road expansion work in the district because of the season.

“People are still harvesting. It is not good for us to say we are opening up the roads only for us to go and damage someone’s crops.”

Asuure explained that while the constituency has remained steadfastly loyal to the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the party and its representatives in Parliament have done very little to reward that loyalty.

“We interacted with some community members, trying to find out what the NDC has done for them, so much so that they do not want to turn to other political parties.”

“One person said it is a family party. I find this ridiculous because, in this time and era, we should be focusing our attention on political parties that work to develop our communities.”

The NPP’s candidate insisted that the people’s loyalty to the NDC has not been adequately rewarded, citing the lack of major development projects from the MPs or NDC governments.

Asuure hopes to be the first woman to win the seat. Additionally, she aims to be the first NPP candidate to be elected Member of Parliament (MP), thirty-two years after the constituency’s creation.

It is worth recalling that in 2012, the NPP presented Diana Aburiya Asuure as a parliamentary candidate for Bongo.

She lost the election to Albert Abongo. The NDC’s Albert Abongo polled 18,609 votes, representing 53.7% of the votes, while Asuure garnered 11,118 votes, representing 32.01% of the total votes cast.

The Bongo constituency remains the only constituency in the Upper East Region to have been represented in Parliament by members of the NDC for 32 years since its creation.
