We’re still in legal period to provide provisional voter register, says EC

Benjamin Bano-Bioh, the director of electoral services at the Electoral Commission (EC), has addressed criticisms from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding access to the provisional voter register.

The NDC has accused Electoral Commission of withholding the register from them ahead of its public exhibition, scheduled to run from Tuesday (20 August) until Tuesday (27 August).

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Tuesday (20 August), Bano-Bioh clarified that the EC had adhered to the legal timeframe for providing the provisional register to political parties.

He explained that, by law, the EC has up to three months after a voter registration exercise to distribute copies of the provisional register to political parties.

“The law requires that after any registration exercise, after you have compiled a voter roll, we have within three months to give copies of the provisional voter register to the political parties,” Bano-Bioh stated.

He further noted that the limited voter registration ended in May and that the EC is still within the legal period to provide the provisional register.

The commission also undertook a mop-up registration to ensure the provisional register is accurate and free from discrepancies before handing it over to political parties.

Bano-Bioh emphasised that the EC had until Thursday (29 August) to meet the deadline but had already begun distributing the register on Monday (19 August).

“Even if you look at it, the deadline would have ended on 29 August 29 but we gave it to them yesterday; other political parties are also coming for theirs. So, we have not gone beyond what the law provides and we are still within the law,” he said.

He also stressed the EC’s commitment to ensuring clean and credible elections, stating that a clean voter register is crucial for the success of the electoral process.

“The most important thing was for us to ensure that we get a very clean voter register, which we have done,” Bano-Bioh said.

“A clean voter register is one of the main pillars for ensuring successful elections, and that is what the electoral commission is bent on doing and so we have not faulted; we are still within the law.”
