Damako is a rural community in the Nkwanta North District of the Oti Region. The community and its adjourning villages have seen an increase in water-related diseases over the past years, hence resulting in the death of some residents, the majority being children.
Some residents fear the situation could escalate as they continue to fetch from the available source of water, a tributary of the River called Oti River, which has been badly polluted and is known to be the source of many diseases in the community.
The residents share water with cattle and other animals from contaminated river sources in the area.
The assemblyman for the Damako electoral area, Kwabena Vincent said, the community is in huge need of potable water.
According to the assemblyman, the community of Damako and its surrounding villages are about 25,000 people living in Brewaniase who are using just four mechanised boreholes, some of which are in a deplorable state.
He has, therefore, appealed to government and non-governmental organisations to come to their aid and rescue them. Adding that, another challenge is the lack of public toilets for the community.
Speaking to Asaase News, Paulina, a mother of three, lamented how they struggle to get portable drinking water.
She said the situation becomes dire in the dry season.
This situation is also affecting teaching and learning, as students in the community struggle to go to school early.
Alice a resident of the Damako community, also pleaded to anyone who would hear their cry to support the community with potable water and public toilets.
Residents are appealing to philanthropists and the government to support them have access to portable drinking water.
