Political analyst Joshua Jebuntie Zaato has argued that the recent chaos during the three-day Democracy Hub protest was deliberately engineered to maintain the issue in the news cycle.
Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum on Saturday (28 September), Zaato drew parallels with previous protests, suggesting that some demonstrations are designed with a provocative element to extend their media presence.
He cited the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) “Enough is Enough” nationwide protest, which failed to generate prolonged coverage due to its lack of confrontation.
“In Ghana, it seems there’s sometimes an inbuilt aspect of provocation in the protest,” Zaato remarked.
“The NDC did that; they protested heavily, the whole country. The story didn’t make the headlines on the Monday or the Tuesday. It did not because they finished and they left.”
Zaato suggested that the arrests of protesters were a strategic move to keep the Democracy Hub protest in the spotlight.
“This story is still making headlines a week after, and it was built in, it’s transactional cost by the protesters. We get arrested, the case is in court and that means that this issue keeps [alive],” he explained.
He also pointed out the significance of the location chosen for the demonstrators, “You must look at the spot they picked; you picked in front of the Jubilee House and you picked one of the most important and critical intersections in Ghana. So it was baked into that cake.”
