CAF Pitch Ban: This is a Monumental international embarrassment –  Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament(MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has expressed his disappointment with the pitch ban by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Hon Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa while reacting to the ban placed on Ghana by CAF, described the incident as an international embarrassment.

According to him, most of the African countries CAF might suggest Ghanaians should play their home matches are African countries that used to look up to Ghana as a powerhouse for football.

He further mentioned that Ghana has a good track record in football which makes the recent ban an embarrassment to the country.

“The banning of the pitch by CAF is a monumental international embarrassment to us as a country. So if Ghana wants to play a home match we’ll have to travel to Togo before we can play a home match. Meanwhile, Ghana is a football powerhouse in Africa.”

“Those days when we were winning Africa Cup around the early 1980s, a lot of these African countries had not qualified for the tournaments we were winning on multiple occasions.”

“Ghana has a track record of winning the World Cup, African cups, and Olympics, many African countries had not dreamt about that. So how did a country like Ghana, a role model country, an iconic nation with a good football history not boast of 1 FIFA standard pitch? It’s a monumental and international embarrassment.” He lamented

Last week, CAF announced that it had withdrawn the conditional approval for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to host Black Stars matches.

CAF, in a statement to the GFA, mentioned the poor nature of the pitch, drainage, and other issues as the basis for the decision to withdraw the approval.

As a result of the ban, Ghana is likely to face Sudan in a crucial AFCON qualifying doubleheader in October, with Togo or Côte d’Ivoire being the likely venue for Ghana’s home leg in the fixture.
