Businesses in parts of Kenya have opted to close down for fear of being looted in the ongoing protest by the youth against the Finance Bill containing controversial tax hikes, the editorial manager of Capital FM Bernard Momanyi has said.

Speaking to Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (27 June), Momanya said, “This morning there is a lot of problem but coming to CBD all areas have been blocked because there have been youth meetings overnight”

“Around Nairobi currently as we speak most businesses are closed… the business closure is linked to what happened, whereby most businesses were looted by protesters who made their way to Parliament and critical government installations.”

“Most businesses have opted this morning not to open for fear of the unknown. But, so far, there has not been demonstrations in Nairobi and most people are waiting to see what will happen later, ” Momanya said.

Kenya’s President William Ruto says he will withdraw a finance bill containing controversial tax hikes after deadly protests which saw parliament set ablaze on Tuesday.

In an address to the nation, he said it was clear that Kenyans “want nothing” to do with the bill.

“I concede,” he said, adding that he will not sign the bill into law.

At least 22 people were killed in Tuesday’s protests, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC).
