The nation is on edge as Jean Mensa, Chairperson of Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC), prepares to announce the official results of the 2024 presidential election.
The declaration, scheduled for 4:30 PM today, Monday, December 7, follows weeks of intense campaigning and a high voter turnout.
Samuel Tettey, Regional Director of Electoral Affairs, revealed during a press conference that results from 13 out of the 16 regions have been received and are sufficient to make the final declaration. He urged political parties and their supporters to remain calm.
“We appeal to everyone to exercise patience and avoid inciting unnecessary disturbances. Let us respect the process and allow the Electoral Commission to complete its constitutional mandate,” he stated.
Preliminary results have already sparked excitement among supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), as former President John Dramani Mahama is poised for a landslide victory.
Early figures indicate that Mahama has garnered 57.17% of the total valid votes, far ahead of his closest contender, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who has secured 40.88%.
This outcome marks a significant comeback for Mahama, whose campaign focused on addressing economic hardships and rebuilding trust in governance.
Beyond the presidency, the NDC has made remarkable gains in Parliament, reportedly winning over 180 seats, cementing their dominance in Ghana’s political landscape.
