Both past and present governments have failed us – Jantuah on galamsey blame game

Illegal mining, or “galamsey,” has long been a thorn in Ghana’s side, ravaging water bodies, farmlands, and biodiversity reserves.

Despite numerous promises from successive governments, the menace continues, sparking frustration across the nation.

For Kwame Jantuah, a member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) and a respected legal practitioner, the Ghana Police Service must bear a significant share of the blame for the ongoing crisis.

Speaking on the Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Jantuah criticized the police for their perceived inability to enforce the law and protect Ghana’s natural resources.

“We have a police service that doesn’t know how to handle the law,” he declared, emphasizing that the police are a critical part of the fight against galamsey.

He expressed his dismay at reports of illegal mining encroaching on protected biodiversity reserves, questioning the police’s response to such violations.

“Today, we hear they’ve gone into the biodiversity reserves to mine. What’s the police service doing?”

Jantuah didn’t reserve his criticism solely for law enforcement. He also directed his frustration at Ghana’s political leadership, accusing both past and present administrations of neglecting their responsibilities.

Referring to a legislative instrument he identified as “2464,” Jantuah accused President Akufo-Addo of failing to keep his promise to withdraw the regulation.

He urged former President Mahama to take swift action. “The ally, what is it, 2464—the one President Akufo-Addo promised to withdraw, which he didn’t withdraw from parliament.

“I think President Mahama should quickly, quickly, quickly withdraw it so that we can take people on.”
