Member of Parliament for Akatsi South, Bernard Ahiafor has been elected as the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament in the 9th Parliament.
His nomination was mooted by Kwame Governs Agbodza, who is an acting majority chief whip and was seconded by the minority’s Patricia Apiagyei.
His election as first Deputy Speaker of Parliament is in line with Article 95(1) of the 1992 Constitution which states that there shall be a Speaker of Parliament elected by the members of Parliament from among persons who are members of Parliament or qualified to be elected as members of Parliament.
The NDC had earlier agreed in a meeting to make Bernard Ahiafor the first Deputy Speaker of Parliament.
