The managing director of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), Nana Akwasi Awuah has kicked against proposal for a ban on small-scale mining in the country.
His comment is in reference to calls by some stakeholders for a ban on small -scale mining due to the pollution of some water bodies across the country.
Awuah argues that the ban could affect other small-scale miners who are legally registered from operating their concessions.
Speaking with Bonohene Baffour Awuah on Atumpan on AsaasePa 107.3 on Tuesday (24 September), Awuah said banning small scale mining could be a threat to national security.
”Depriving persons who are operating legally as small-scale miners because of a few bad ones who are engaging in small scale illegally could badly affect the livelihood of some miners.”
”You know the repercussions of that, that could be a recipe for a national security situation,” the PMMC boss said.
